New research suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People using these medications must be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a reversion to starting mass within about a year and a half.
The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally see a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections explains the heightened regain.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Users who have come off the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled a patient.
The struggle is compounded if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
