One Piece Ends a Quarter-Century Era in 2026

It's the end of an iconic period for long-running series, with the production studio revealing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and included dozens of filler arcs. Commencing in the new year, after the current storyline wraps up, the animated series will take a three-month hiatus until spring, when the next major arc begins.

New Release Strategy

Going forward, the series will release two seasons every annually for a maximum of 26 episodes. Toei states this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the universe — incorporating more content, rhythm, and pacing of the original manga.” However, Toei conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which suggests more One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere in the interim.

Learning from Past Breaks

The One Piece anime had a half-year pause that started in late 2024 and ended in April 2025. The intermission was for the animators to improve the visuals and let the comic to build a lead to avoid a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The anime couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has been able to supply fans with countless action sequences, high-quality animation, and less filler than previously.

Adopting Modern Trends

While a few summary installments appeared during the recent run, the positive effects of this new production schedule far surpass the odd pause in the action. This additionally allows the manga, which is presently in the thick of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. Per the news, this may result in one episode of the anime covering a single manga chapter, with some instead covering more material or additional to make up for scheduling.

This concludes of a generation for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the last big series to abandon the old-school way of production, which focused on airing for most of the calendar. This explains why classics such as Bleach, and naturally itself have so many filler arcs, and the quality of the animation can vary widely between installments and the next. Nowadays, series creation is organized in cours, with one or two at most releasing each annually, allowing for improved visuals and more faithfulness to the source material.
