A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” declared the head of state.
The official announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose term finished the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
The development of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in public projects. They were executed at an accelerated pace, surpassing predictions to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party called for an urgent pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This pause was proposed until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital undertakings.
